So the month of June has arrived yet again. Throughout the month there are a number of special dates to celebrate and enjoy. Each person celebrates these dates differently and they have different meaning s for everyone.
For starters there is the fact that midway through the month is the summer equinox meaning the official start to the summer season. Most of the time this date goes by without much of a to do. There is also the fact that Father’s Day occurs during this month.
Then there is the fact that Flag Day is celebrated every year on the 14th. Every year there are parades held throughout the country to celebrate his event. Nationally the largest of these parades id held in my hometown of Troy, NY. Coincidentally this is also considered the U.S. Army’s birthday.
Then there is the historical events. Among them most notably is that of D-Day. Every year there are ceremonies to remember that day. Most notably is held at the WWII monument in Washington, D.C. There is also the Battle of Bunker Hill that occurred on June 17th. Every year there is a large parade held in Boston, Massachusetts in the area of Charlestown. This is the location of the original battle and the location of the monument.
One of the largest celebrations throughout the country is national LGBT pride month. This month was chosen in honor of the Stonewall riots that occurred at the end of June in 1969. During this month and several months thereafter there are celebrations, parades, and festivals held all over the country. It is the time of year to let the rainbow pride flag fly free.
However, this year there was a major mass causality incident that occurred. In the early hours of Sunday June, 12th there was a shooting at the nightclub “Pulse” in Orlando, Florida. Not only was this a horrible event it was a targeted at towards the LGBT community since the nightclub catered to this group of people.
Following this horrible event the LGBT community and the country banded together stronger than before. Throughout the country candlelight vigils were held in remembrance of the innocent victims. This is an event that can’t be forgotten anytime soon.
