What Happened to Winter

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. At least that is what Christmas songs say. It seems that every year there are more and more Christmas songs released. No matter where you go you hear Christmas music pumped throughout the building. Everyone always seems to be in a jolly mood.

Even though Earl is not a big fan of the entire time of the year. In fact he would not mind if the entire time of year was taken right off the calendar. Every day some wishes him a happy Holiday or a Merry Christmas. Generally the only response he gives same to you. In this day and age who dares say more without the fear of offending someone.

However, this year is more unique then any of the others. With the way the weather patterns have been it doesn’t fell much like Christmas. So far this year there has only been a day or two where there were some snow flurries. Of course they didn’t accumulate to anything.

It sure has rained a lot this holiday season. Not to mention the average temp has been in the mid to upper forties. On most days it has felt more like spring then it has any other time of the year.

Even with his despising the holiday season Earl misses the snow. To him it feels less like a holiday. No snow makes him feel more and more depressed about this time of year. With everything looking so brown, dead and the fact it gets dark so early doesn’t help.

Living in New England snow is an integral part of the holidays and the winter in general. Not to mention that there are a lot of people and businesses that count on the snow to make their livings.

Every day one song plays over and over in his mind. That song being “Snow” written by Irving Berlin and performed by Rosemary Clooney. However, he much preferred the quartet version with Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye and Vera Ellen from the movie White Christmas. One line in particular stick with him “No white Christmas with no snow.”

Morning after morning Earl looks out his window in hoping of seeing a fresh coat of snow on the ground. All that seems to be out there is clouds or another rainy day. Since he doesn’t trust the weather man he can only hope to see a change in the weather. Someday hopefully soon there will be sow on the ground.
